Budget Cost
How much will your kitchen cost? It is
estimated that over 45% of kitchen remodeling jobs will
cost at least $20,000.00 or more. Most kitchens that are
being replaced are only 5-7 years old and are the stock
and semi-custom cabinets that do not compare to custom
cabinetry.
Sometimes the cost of a new kitchen can seem quite
expensive, but quality and durability always comes
with a price. To justify this investment, it is worth
considering how much a well designed quality kitchen
adds to the value of your home and increases your
enjoyment of being at home. Putting off your kitchen
project, will only mean paying more for it in the future
and reaping less reward because your investment has less
time to appreciate. Surewood Fine Cabinetry only sells
high quality custom cabinets, but at an affordable
price. We are manufacturing our own line of cabinets,
this allows us to be extremely competitive. We do not
believe in selling stock cabinets because
in our experience they just don't give you the same
value - your kitchen should be a lifetime investment.
Understanding costs associated with cabinet construction
- methods and materials can make up as much as 60% of
the cabinet cost. Better construction methods make for a
more durable cabinet. For example, a dovetailed, solid
wood drawer costs more than a pinned particle board
drawer and will certainly last longer. If you need to
save money, don't skimp in the area of cabinet
construction.
Layout
- Deciding on the
layout of your kitchen and cabinet configuration is
important in your price point. For instance, a Lazy Susan will cost more than a sink cabinet. A stack of
drawers will be higher priced than a one-two door base
cabinet. A U-shaped kitchen costs more than an L-shape
with an island. A wall oven/cook top combination makes
the kitchen cost about $1,000 more than it would if you
were to choose a free standing range.
Finishes
- Hand-painted cabinets
will run about 10 - 15% more than a standard stained
finish. Glazes and layered finishes will run 15%-20%
more than a standard stain due to the extra labor.
Custom distressing options like edge wear, splatter, or
rub through are also an increase in labor and cost, but
achieve a unique look.
Wood Species
- Hickory,
oak, and pine usually run very close in price, while
maple will run slightly more, Cherry and red
birch carry their own up-charges. When you compare prices
from one company to another, always make sure you match
cabinet construction, door style, finish, layout,
accessories, etc., or you may not be comparing apples to
apples.
How should I calculate my
kitchen
budget?
The 10% to 20% rule is a
handy tool to help determine how much you spend on your
kitchen project. Basically, the rule states that the
entire kitchen project (including cabinets, appliances,
countertops, flooring, etc,) should typically costs no
less than 10% and no more than 20% of the current value
of your home ... with approximately 55 - 60% of the total
cost allocated for cabinets.
